It has been shown that pH and the content of organic matter regulating primarily the development of Streptophyta are among the main factors responsible for the formation of epiphytic algae communities. Results of experiments have shown that algae prevailing in epiphyton of higher aquatic plants are capable of consuming low molecular organic compounds. It has been found that in the thichets of higher aquatic plants the formation of algae communities depends to a large extent on the presence of phenol carbonic acids in the water. The tolerance of algae to the influence of the above mentioned compounds is conditioned by their antioxidant activity.
