A basic scheme of the multi-channel high-precision SCANning POLarimeter SkanPol is developed to measure the intensity and polarization of the sunlight scattered by aerosol and cloud particles within the spectral bands lambda = 370, 410, 865, 1380, 1600 nm with a width of lambda = 10-20 nm. The polarimeter SkanPol will observe each nominal area on the Earth's surface from over 100 scattering angles, thereby greatly increasing the information content of the measurements. A panoramic camera with high spatial resolution (0.5 km) will be mounted on the satellite platform and will provide for independent estimates of the cloud fraction within a relatively large field of view of the polarimeter, thereby facilitating the retrieval of information on the properties of both aerosols and clouds.
