The research objective is to develop guidelines on modernization of problem assemblies of the existing freight cars of different types, in particular tank cars, flat cars, hoppers to enhance their road safety, to increase service performance and raise their operational life. The research methods are mathematical modeling, computer simulation, statistical dynamics, numerical integration, mathematical statistics, and the theory of vibrations. The results are obtained. Developed are design and mathematical models of 3-D vibrations of tank cars, flat cars and hoppers with complex modernized trucks in motion on an inertial elastodissipative track, mathematical model of motion of a non-uniform freight train under transient traffic conditions, as well as design and mathematical models of motion at a variable speed of freight car string considering in detail the processes of interaction and wear of bodies in the system of resting the car body on trucks and forces in inter-car couplings. Multiversion calculations are made resulting in guidelines on upgrading of the trucks of different freight cars to enhance their road safety, to increase their service performance and raise their operation life. Dynamic loading of a non-uniform freight train with tank cars under transient traffic conditions is studied. Guidelines for makeup of such train to enhance road safety are developed. The research results will be employed by Ukzaliznytsya, the car-building and car-repair plants, car sheds for a complex modernization of running gears when renewing Ukrainian freight cars.
