Objective: to study the role of humic substances in the formation of the hydrochemical regime of surface water bodies of different types and quality of their aquatic environment, the migration of metals and nutrients and their distribution among the abiotic components of aquatic ecosystems. Methods: membrane filtration, and titrimetry and ionometry, spectrophotometric, photometric and chemiluminescence, ion exchange and size exclusion chromatography. Results and novelty. The peculiarities of the formation of organic matter in different water bodies are established. It is shown that humic substances as a fraction of DOM are dominated in surface waters and affect on the formation of water quality. High content of humic substances in the water causes a decrease in the concentration of dissolved oxygen and increase the migration mobility of nutrients (ammonia nitrogen, iron) in the sediment - water and metals (Al, Fe, Cu, Mn, Cr, Mo) as a result of their binding to the complexes and stabilization in solution, which was established by the example of the Pripyat river basin and the Kiev and Kanev reservoirs, rivers Desna and weakly running lakes and ponds in Kiev. The role of humic substances in the formation of other groups of dissolved organic matter, particularly carbohydrates, and protein-like substances in these water bodies is elucidated. Recommendations for the use of the results of work. Research results represent an important scientific basis for evaluating the role of humic substances in the formation of hydrochemical regime of different types water bodies, particularly their oxygen regime, and develop forecasts of possible changes in the accumulation, migration and distribution of substances among abiotic components of aquatic ecosystems and the chemical composition of the water as a habitat for aquatic biota.
