The purpose is the origination of graphite oxide chemical model, which allows planning an obtaining of samples with the properties that provide the possibility of nanomaterial formation. The methods of research are the synthetic methods, NMR, IR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, functional and elemental analysis. For a wide range of samples of graphite oxide a series of chemical tests has been done for qualitative and quantitative determination of functional groups such as peroxide, hydroperoxide, carbonyl, carboxyl, and epoxy ones. On every occasion, in parallel to graphite oxide chemical test, the analogous reaction with low-molecular model compound was carried out in the same environment. It is established that in the finding of peroxide groups in graphite oxide with hydroiodic acid is no iodine formation by the reactions with epoxy groups. It is possible to find the content of the peroxide and, separately, hydroperoxide groups in graphite oxide with different depths of oxidation. Scientific novelty and fundamental significance of work consisnts in the first-time proposed detailed model of graphite oxide structure, all the chemical structural details of which do not conflict both with the literature data and ones obtained in the frame of this study. The practical significance of this work is in the fact that the data can be used in the preparation of graphite oxide derivatives with increased capability to exfoliation, which is important for working-out of technologies for such new nanomaterials.
