For surface modification of steel and nickel electrodes methods of electrochemical deposition of thin nickel coating from sulfate-chloride electrolyte, comprising a suspension of crushed vanadium, niobium, tantalum pentaoxide, have been developed. Optimum conditions of electrolysis, at which composite nickel coatings sufficiently strongly coupled with electrode base, have been estimated. Comparative studies of regularities of hydrogen cathodic evolution and oxygen anodic evolution from 30 % KOH solution on electrodes demonstrated that maximum depolarization effect on hydrogen evolution is reached on electrodes with surface modified by vanadium-containing nickel coating and oxygen evolution with minimum polarization occurs on electrodes modified by tantalum-containing nickel coating.
