The aim of the research – to offer newest methods for scientific study of military art in Liberation war under the leadership of B. Khmelnytskyi (1648-1657). The novelty of the chosen research approach: for the first time in Ukrainian historiography military art in Liberation war is studied from scientific perspective. Next methods, concepts and approaches to the study of military art in Liberation war are involved: historical-systematic method, principle of scientist’s identification with main hero of research – B. Khmelnytskyi, military doctrine of B. Khmelnytskyi and conception of enemy’s exhaustion, Great Steppe Frontier of Ukraine of the end of XV – middle of XVII centuries, theory of passionarity in ethnogenesis by Lev Humiliov. General historical and general scientific methods are used as well, including imitational modeling, extrapolation, structural and comparative analysis etc. Later receptions of the events of Liberation war in XVIII – XX centuries are also studied.
