It has been found that photoexcited dichotomic fluctuations of the electron density distribution in an extended molecule placed into the electrostatic periodic potential of a polar substrate cause an ensemble of variously oriented molecules to move directionally, provided molecular electron density distributions are symmetric and substrates are asymmetric; in contrast, the ensemble diffuses under the same conditions if molecular electron density distributions are asymmetric and substrates are symmetric.
