It was ascertained that isothermal martensitic transformations in the temperature range between -100 and -170 С occurred under conditions of immobility of carbon atoms. Low-temperature carbide absence and the following delay in precipitation of special carbides are responsible for the influence of the cryogenic treatment on the mechanical properties. The study of the martensitic transformations caused by hydrogen in austenitic steels revealed that hydrogen induced -martensite promotes increase in resistance of austenitic steels to hydrogen embrittlement. Thus -martensite is not the cause of hydrogen brittleness. The energy of interatomic bonds of hydrogen with iron atoms and with alloying elements was determined by means of ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of the iron based solid solutions.
