Vernadsky University popup.description2 Research Report: 421 p., 175 fig., 21 Tables., 486 ref. An object of this study is karst features in the Crimean fore-mountain and Plains regions. A purpose of the research was to establish general regularities of karst system development in multi-layered artesian basins and regional patterns of karst development in the Crimean fore-mountain and plain regions, as well as to develop new approaches to karst-related applied problems based on latest theories of hypogene karstogenesis. Research methods - a combination of methods of regional geological and hydrogeological analysis and geomorphological, karstological, speleomorphogenetic, mineralogical, isotopic and geochemical methods. The report presents an analysis, synthesis and further development of the conceptual foundations of karst-ogy and of theoretical and methodological foundations of hypogene karst studies, aimed to lay down a framework for a new paradigm of karst. Regional analysis of the conditions and characteristics of karst development in the Black Sea artesian basin and, at a more detailed level, in large parts of the plain and fore-mountain regions of the Crimea was performed. Based on new theoretical concepts of the genesis and evolution of karst and on systematic detailed comprehensive investigations in the key areas, predominantly hypogenic origin of karst features is firmly established, principal regularities of karst development and distribution are revealed. Classifications and conceptual models for the formation, functioning and evolution of karst conduit-cavern systems are developed. Significant role of hypogene karst in the formation of carbonate reservoirs is substantiated, as well as its great role in the regional geomorphic development of the Crimean fore-mountains. Findings and recommendations contained in this report should be implicated into the learning process of geological and geographical specialities of universities, as well as in the practice of scientific research and industrial organizations engaged in work on the study and use of natural resources in the karst areas.
