Galkin Physics and Engineering Institute of National Academy of Science of the Ukraine popup.description2 The experimental studies of both the changes of the nanocrystal size and the nanocrystallization kinetics of the amorphous Al87Ni8Y5 alloy under isothermal conditions as well as at constant rate heating have been performed by X-ray diffraction, electrical resistance and microhardness measurements. The aim of the studies is an estimation of the rate of nucleation of Al nanocrystals and theoretical analysis of this process. It has been established that the experimentally evaluated changes of the nucleation rate may be quantitatively described within the classical model of homogeneous nucleation be accounting of the decrease in the thermodynamic driving force due to enrichment of the residual amorphous matrix with alloying elements. The practical importance of the results consists in the increase of microhardness of the samples with nanocomposite structure (from 5440 to 5700 MPa) by its preliminary heating up to temperature of maximum nucleation rate which results in increase of the nanocrystal volume density.
