The complex analysis of the dynamics of functional reinnervation of the distal hindlimb muscles was performed. Functional reinnervation of the flexors was characterized by a relatively greater initial force of contraction and more rapid recovery than those of the extensors. After injury of sciatic nerve the single and systemic injections of sodium gammahydroxybutyrate (NaGHB) have selective action against the injured structure. Shown that systemic injection of NaGHB within 4 weeks after injury the recovery of the muscle activity was accelerated on the side of compression of the nerve; the rates of such recovery in various muscles were dissimilar. Within the late time intervals (10th and 12th weeks) after surgical intervention, the contractile force of the right foot extensors increased (by 40 and 30%, respectively, as compared with the control), while the flexors demonstrated only 5 and 4% increases. In the left (intact) hindlimb, the contractile force of flexors and extensors, beginning from the 3rd week, increased. The effect of NaGHB with respect to the contralateral (intact) hindlimb was manifested as an increment of the contractile force. In acute experiments, course introduction of NaGHB resulted in more than a twofold increase in the thresholds upon stimulation of the n. tibialis comm. and n. peroneus comm.; at the same time, the chronaxia values decreased. The amplitudes of EMG responses of the m. gastrocnemius (GC) and m. tibialis anterior (TA) after NaGHB injections became smaller than in the control, and the latencies of these responses increased. Under these conditions, curves of recovery of the second response at paired stimulation were shifted toward shorter interstimulus intervals. Introduction of NaGHB provided noticeable increases in the force responses of the tested muscles. Such changes were observed bilaterally, and the relative intensities of the corresponding modifications at the side of sciatic nerve compression and the intact side were close to each other. In acute experiments, we were unable to find considerable specificity of the effects of NaGHB on the side of compressive sciatic nerve injury. Manifestations of such selectivity were extremely weak; they corresponded only to a mild tendency. At the same time, such specificity was found where we recorded characteristics of voluntary contractile muscle activity using the same mode of NaGHB introductions. The thesis is dedicated to the substantiation of neurophysiological mechanisms of nervous system integrative activity at rats of different age with experimental al-loxan diabetes mellitus by means of study of conditionally reflector and orientate in-vestigative activity, systems of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense, as well as glial fibrilar acid protein, protein S-100 fractions in the brain. Experimental diabetes mellitus is characterized by development of behavioral deficiency and disturbance of mnestic functions, by accumulation of lipid peroxidation products in brain, most sig-nificantly in middle age rats. Disturbance of central nervous system integrative activ-ity was accompanied by significant increase of glial fibrilar acid protein and protein S-100 concentration with more intensive manifestation in middle age rats.
