It was demonstrated that zinc injection slows down the rate of general and intercrystalline corrosion, which reduces the amounts of corrosion products in the primary coolant as well as the radiation level in the primary circuit, as a consequence. It was demonstrated that gaseous hydrogen injection directly into the primary circuit instead of ammonia or hydrazine reduces the amounts of radioactive waste and facilitates the optimum primary coolant chemistry management. VVER primary circuit structural materials were corrosion-tested at a temperature of 350 and 325°C for 3,000 hours. The options of enhancing the primary coolant chemistry in Ukraine's VVER reactors were considered. The resident zirconium alloy E110 and the experimental Ukrainian alloy Zr1Nb (KTC-110) in the VVER-1000 were subjected to autoclave corrosion tests in the primary coolant composition environment. Both alloys, which were tested in the form of fuel rod tubes, demonstrated high corrosion resistance during 50,000 hours, which translates to 6-7 fuel cycles in a reactor. It was demonstrated that based on the experimental data obtained, the operation lifetime of the fuel rod cladding will not be limited by any of the corrosion parameters, and the fuel rods are equally expected to perform in a longer fuel cycle.
