Pre-treatment of plants with the stress dramatically reduces gravitropism, whereas adaptation increases it. Maize root gravitropism was sharply reduced by vacuum infiltration of the salt stress inducers. Different concentrations of 1-butanol, inhibitor of phospholipase D, additionally increase negative effect of salts on coleoptiles gravitropism. Exogenously applied auxin restores gravitropism in salt stress conditions. Simultaneous application of salt stress and inhibitor of auxin transport additionally reduces this tropic response of maize shoots. Gravitropism of hypocotyls and influorescence stems was investigated in Arabidopsis loss-of-function mutants in different genes of non-specific phospholipase C (NPC). It was observed that hypocotyls gravitropism was reduced in npc3 and npc4 mutants, in comparison with npc2 and npc5 mutants.
