In particular we intensively investigate an opportunity to use them for structural steels intended for nuclear power engineering and for solid-state storage elements required by the water power engineering. In both cases the positive impact of nanocrystallinity is that the branched network of grain boundaries creates the system of diffusion channels, which contributes to the removal of gas dopants from materials. In the first case, these are harmful products of nuclear reactions (hydrogen and helium) and in the second case it is hydrogen that should have an opportunity for the fast adsorption and desorption from the crystalline structure of storage elements. To create a nanocrystalline structure we used the ion beam-assisted deposition technique (IBAD method). Vanadium was used as a basic material. This material is very attractive both for nuclear power engineering and hydrogen absorption in large quantities. Using the above technologies we created compact and porous nanocrystalline VN structures with the grain size of 5 to 50nm. We also studied helium and hydrogen behavior in these materials depending on their amount and burning temperature. It has been shown that the availability of the broad network of intergranular boundaries is a positive factor that contributes to the fast removal of those gases from the crystalline lattice, preventing therethrough the formation of gas pores. The availability of boundaries and interganular pores in porous structures initiates hydrogen adsorption/ desorption processes in a complex VNHx hydride. The methods of studies of the behavior of implanted helium and hydrogen in nanocrystalline and nanoporous thin-film structures have been developed.
