EMAP II present in the culture medium at concentrations of 10-5, 10-4 or 10-3 mg/ml dose-dependently inhibited the cell's growth due tostimulation of apoptosis and, perhaps, due to inhibition of cell proliferation. Enhancement of LNCaP cells apoptosis was evidenced by the appearance of the apoptotic bodies and nuclear DNA defragmentation, as assayed by TUNEL method. Thus, our study demonstrates for the first time the ability of the human recombinant EMAP II to inhibit growth of non-stimulated cancer cells in vitro without involvement of its well known antiangiogenic effect.
