For the first time taxonomic structure of benthos and planktonic microalgae inhabiting the Sea of Azov were inventoried and revised; as a result, the list of 1064 taxa (including 32 toxic algal species) attributed to 8 divisions of plant kingdom has been compiled. Similarly, benthos and planktonic microalgae were inventoried in three maritime nature reserves of the Crimea – Kazachiya bay, Karadag (Black Sea) and Kazantip (Sea of Azov). The diversity of data on species diversity of epilithon, periphyton and epiphyton diatoms occurring in the Black Sea and in the Sea of Azov was reviewed and used in comparative analysis. Individual age of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, a Black Sea mollusc, and Cystoseirs barbata, a brown alga, these heavy metal biocollectors, has proved to be a reliable marker; now the environmental quality of impacted ecosystem is assessed from the content of heavy metals these organisms have accumulated. Seasonal dynamics of heavy metals was determined from measurements of the content of Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, As, Ni, Pb and Zn in soft tissues and shells of M. galloprovincialis and the content of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in thalli, branches and stems of C. barbata collected from a variety of seawater localities along the Crimean shore (Black Sea). It was found that concentrations of heavy metals in the thalli varied depending on season of a year. The technology for processing molluscs is proposed; duly processed, the natural stuff from ecologically unsafe marine environment is a safe and commercially promising final product. Used as a food and fodder additive, the stuff from mussels has proved effective in improving human and animal protein metabolism and immunity, and reproductive characteristics of livestock Product Description popup.authors Алєєв М.Ю.
