Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 The physical and chemical properties of core powdered mixtures of self-shielding flux-cored wires were studied that enabled to determine ways of improving the wire technological characteristics. A small diameter self-shielding flux-cored wire for all-position welding of low-alloy steel metal structures has been developed, and technology of its production at industrial conditions has been mastered. A complex of researches and developments was fulfilled on perfection of the manufacture process of small diameter self-shielding flux-cored wire. Regulations for the flux-cored wire manufacture process, which includes operations on preparing the frit and aluminum-calcium alloy powders. A system of the wire sheath formation and drawing of the wire 1.6 mm in diameter was studied and worked through on industrial base of State Enterprise "Welding Consumables Pilot Plant of the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute". Under industrial conditions a new scheme of the flux-cored wire treatment during its drawing was developed and tested, which envisages the use of calcium and sodium stearates at intermediate stages of the wire drawing and the wire surface treatment with protective paste, which provides an inhibitory (protective) properties for atmospheric corrosion prevention, at the wire calibration stage. Technological documentation for the wire manufacture was developed. A batch of the small diameter self-shielding flux-cored wire of tubular design for site welding was produced for the first time in Ukraine. The wire property indices meet the requirements to the PS-46-A3V type according to DSTU GOST 26271 national standard and the T46 3 1Ni Y 2 type according to EN ISO 17832 International standard. Recommendations on application of the new flux-cored wire for welding of typical joints at mining and metallurgical installation repairing and renewal works were developed. The introduction of mechanized welding with self-shielding wire at plants of mining and smelting complex has confirmed an increase of welding work productivity more than by factor of 2, providing energy saving, the increase of the resistance against formation of hot and cold cracks and the improvement of operating characteristics of welded joints due to the normalizing of weld metal and fusion zone.
