Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 More than 30 millions of dollars were spent for elimination of imperfections of steam turbine unit of Ukrainian HEP in a course of last 5 years (1998-2003). Damage of the plant during idle and repair of the turbine is in several times higher. Thus, problem of increase of safe service time of these elements of heat-and-power units is very important. Therefore, organization of indicated work is not only relevant but extremely necessary. Analysis of damages of steam turbines from different HEP of Ukraine were carried out in the work for studying the reasons of their degradation using different methods of physical materials science, i.e. light and electron microscopy, Auger spectrometry, mass spectrometry of secondary ions, energy-dispersed analysis, local mass spectrometry analysis with laser microprobe etc. Problem of determination of reasons and conditions of failure of material of steam turbine blades not from point of view of searching for optimum operation technology and selection of optimum medium, but considering the processes taking place inside the metal during its operation and which can result in formation of fracture nucleuses and degradation of blade metal with time at the end was stated for the first time in this work for heat-and-power engineering. However, obtaining of grounded conclusions and recommendations requires gathering of specific statistical data which provide the possibility for consideration of main mechanisms of the processes which take place in metal during long-term operation as well as a result of effect of media of specific composition and temperature, loading mode and other service factors. The situations is complicated by the fact that full set of blades of all grades which operated different times is necessary for obtaining of reliable results and determine what changes in particular result in formation of fracture nucleuses in metal.
