Karazin popup.description2 Objective: To create a collection of DNA for natives of Ukrainians living in different regions of Ukraine. To identify the main features of the Ukrainian gene pool on different types of molecular genetic markers. The collection of DNA samples contains more than 1,200 indigenous Ukrainians of the major historical and territorial regions of Ukraine. We genotyped 156 and 604 DNA samples by SNP and STR markers of Y chromosome respectively, also we genotyped 150 DNA samples by autosomal STR markers of DNA identification. The main characteristics of Y-chromosomal polymorphism in Ukrainians correspond to East European pattern and are similar to the Balkan region. Ukrainian populations have low genetic differentiation on Y-chromosome markers; populations from different regions of Ukraine have greater genetic similarity to each other than to the geographically and historically close neighboring nations. The genetic affiliation of Ukrainian population on mitochondrial markers covers the territory of Ukraine, Poland, western coast of the Black Sea, West-Central Russia and Norway.
