Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology popup.description2 The cells of peripheral blood and bone marrow were studied in the specimens of 107 patients suspected of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The distinct cytomorphological features were defined in the transformed bone marrow hematopoietic cells capable of inducing MDS, namely refractory anemia, refractory neutropenia and refractory trobocytopenia. The immunophenotypic patterns of the transformed bone marrow progenitor cells in certain forms of MDS have been delineated. These cells have been proved to express the markers of hematopoietic stem cells (CD117, HLA-DR, CD34) as well as the markers of the least differentiated cells of corresponding hematopoietic lineages: erytroid progenitor cells - glycoforin A; granulocytic progenitor cells - CD33, CD13, CD15, CD11b, CD7. Expression of CD56 well known as a molecule of surface cell adhesion was also reported in the cells of several patients with MDS at the stage of the transformation to acute myelogenous leukemia specifying the condition that is more malignant.
