We found that human breast cancer cells of the most aggressive basal subtype (MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468) are characterized by hypomethylation of light and heavy ferritin chains genes and significant reduction of miRNA 133а and 200b expression, which take part in regulation of expression of these proteins. We showed that mentioned changes in epigenetic regulation of iron metabolism proteins caused elevation of reactive oxygen species generation and raise of unbound iron pool levels. The acquired fundamental data might be a basis for use of miRNA 133а and 200b as breast cancer markers of prognosis and aggressiveness.
