It is found that while diabetes streptozotsinum was developed the level and the ratio of different forms of nicotinamide coenzymes in the retina and in the blood are significantly reduced, which leads to a reduction in oxidative potential of the NAD-NADH system and reduction in potential NADP-NADPH. Nicotinamide using in patients with diabetes significantly increases the level of oxidized form NAD and the reduced of NADP form in the retina and blood, decreases the degree of damage in mitochondrial enzyme systems of the retina and, thus, does a positive impact on the energetic and transport processes in the retina.
