Object of research is the economic space as a form of organization of society. Objective is to develop instruments and models for the research of spatial economic development and competitiveness of regions of Ukraine and practical recommendations for reform of the administrative-territorial structure of Ukraine and local governments. Research methods are comparative and factor analysis, economic and statistical methods, system-structural analysis, cartographic modeling method, method of historicism, spatial analysis and logic synthesis methods and statistical groupings and so on. Results and novelty are: the basic control instruments for spatial and economic development and basic instruments for improving administrative and territorial structure of local government are systematized; the organizational and economic instruments for implementations the "National Strategy for Regional Development" are developed; the nature of instruments for competitiveness and for reduce inter-regional disproportionality are extended. Degree of implementation. Research are prepared for the 46 scientific and analytical memoranda submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, ministries and other agencies, in 17 of which received rave reviews. Recommendations for the use of research. Scientific, theoretical, methodological and practical development can be used to assess the competitiveness of regions and determine the direction of regional processes, to develop strategies for regional development, to format of efficient and self-sufficient local communities, and to determine areas of administrative-territorial structure. Application is state regional policy in Ukraine. The significance of the work and conclusions is to develop of tools and models for the study of spatial economic development and competitiveness of regions of Ukraine; and to study ways of improving the strategic management of economic development of Ukraine in the context of spatial development and practical recommendations for reform of the administrative -territorial structure of Ukraine and local governments.
