Galkin Physics and Engineering Institute of National Academy of Science of the Ukraine popup.description2 The object is the relation between the chemical composition and structure, thermal stability and strength properties of amorphous and nanostructured Al-based alloys. The aim is establishment of the effect of replacement of Ni with Co or Fe and that of Y with Gd on structure, the onset crystallization temperature and mechanism of nanocrystallization as well as on the structural parameters of nanophase composites and their microhardness. The compositional dependences of the microhardness, thermal stability and nanocrystallization mechanisms for three groups of Al86Ni8-xCoxY6, Al86Ni8-xCoxGd6 and Al87Ni8(Y/Gd)5 amorphous alloys have been established and the structural parameters and microhardness of the nanocomposites which formed at the first stage of crystallization by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, microhardness and electrical resistance measurements techniques have been determined. It has been found that nanocrystallization of all alloys investigated occurring via two mechanisms results in essential enhancement of microhardness (up to 5.2-5.98 GPa) which determined by the volume fraction of the residual amorphous matrix. The experimentally established compositional dependencies of the onset crystallization temperatures and microhardness of amorphous Al-based alloys and those of structural and strength characteristics of nanophase composites form the basis for the targeted selection of the alloy compositions which will provide obtaining of the materials with the certain combinations of mechanical properties.
