Work objective: development of system of primary seed breeding of milk thistle which would provide support of productive and qualitative characteristics of seed on the correspondent variety level. Research method: individual-family selection, biochemical-analytical. The system of primary seed breeding of milk thistle was developed as a result of research performed in 2011-2013, which anticipates three-year-scheme of the selected seed reproduction. In the course of work it was selected and analyzed 700 parent plants and 65 families according to economically valuable characteristics (amount of productive stalks, anthodium on plants, weight of 1000 seeds, productiveness), and their best 175 seed samples were estimated according to biochemical characteristics (silymarin and oil content). It was determined the divergence of basic quantitative and qualitative characteristics of milk thistle variety of Boikivchanka. It was established the tendency of silymarin content increase in the process of seed reproduction in samples with the figure of 1-3% and its decrease in samples with the figure more than 3%, at the same time oil content proved to be a stable feature. The rational parameters of individual-family selection process were determined for the effective primary seed breeding of milk thistle. It was produced 1,1 t of original seed of Silybum marianum with the correspondent qualitative characteristics.
