Namely liquidators of the 1986-1989 period and evacuees from the Chernobyl area (96 persons), residents of areas contaminated with radiation (52 people), and their descendants (43 children). The comparison group (those not implicated in the accident) included 38 people. Total sample was 229 persons. Study objective: to determine the clinical features of the course of different types of diabetes mellitus, and to develop the criteria for differential diagnosis with the latest scientific data applied. Methods: retrospective evaluation of the generally accepted clinical, anthropometric (weight, height, body mass index), instrumental (blood pressure, ECG, ultrasound of the thyroid gland), laboratory (biochemical, hormonal) data; statistics. In the course of research a unified chart of the study was developed based on the analysis of the latest scientific evidence on the differences in diagnosis and pathogenesis of certain types of diabetes mellitus and forms of thyroid disorders, their possible combinations. Survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident were examined to identify the priority research groups with more rare (difficult to diagnose) types of diabetes mellitus and the combination of diabetes mellitus and non-malignant thyroid pathology, the definition of criteria for the differential diagnosis of different types of diabetes mellitus, taking into account the results of analysis of the clinical and scientific data.
