Realization and investigation of structure and optical properties of the geometrically confined liquid crystal blue phases, particularly blue phases confined to thin nanolayers with thickness comparable to lattice constant of the blue phase were the goal of our project. Method of preparation was developed and investigations of thin films of liquid crystal blue phases were carried out. By means of optical high resolution microscopy and optical conoscopy (Kossel diagram technique) we have shown that in wedge cells at thickness of order of blue phase lattice constant, transition from bulk 3D periodical structure to 2D periodical structure with hexagonal symmetry occurs.
