The method of piezooptic effect investigation in gyrotropic crystals by analysing the intensity distribution of the optical field in a vortex was proposed. Experimentally proved the existence of a gradient piezogyration effect in crystals induced by inhomogeneous mechanical stresses. A description of this effect on the basis of the nonlocal linear theory of elasticity was proposed. It was established that the temperature dependence of the Cotton - Mouton coefficient in lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal deviates from the behaviour provided by the Landau-de Gennes theory as well as where different for different chromonic materials. On the base on the study of the optical phase difference in strong magnetic fields the nonzero induced circular birefringence in nonchiral material was detected.
