Research objects - adsorbents - natural and modified layer silicates; modifiers - cationic surface-active substances and cationic polyelectrolytes; adsorbates - water, methanol, anionic dyes. Methods of research - quantum chemistry, molecular statistics, photocolorimetry, adsorption calorimetry, X-ray phase analysis, atom-absorption spectrophotometry, gel chromatography, IR- photometry, mathematical processing of experimental data. Equipment - high-sensitive calorimeter Tiana-Calve Ms-70, diffractometer Bruker AXS D8, ІR-spectrometer Perkin-Elmer 325, spectrophotometer Specord IR-75, personal computer. Theoretical and practical results - complex of spectral, colloid-chemical and adsorption methods is used for the systematic studies of the state of humic substances in the solutions and adsorbed on the surface of soil minerals. The association of humic acids in aqueous solutions depending on their concentration, pH value of medium and the nature of counter-ion is studied. Using the quantum chemical ab initio method the adsorption of water molecules on the basal surface of talc is studied. The mechanisms of interaction of long-chained cations of the homologous series (C8…C12) of tertiary alkylammonium bromides trimethyloctylammonium, decyltrymethylammonium and dodecyltrymethylammonium with Na-form of Covdor vermiculite are revealed.. Novelty - the dependence of the state in which humic acids exist on their surface-active, sorption and solubilisation properties is shown. It is shown that the adsorption of water molecules on the hydrophobic surface results in the formation of microclusters of water molecules bound by the hydrogen bonds with the "secondary" adsorption centres which are formed by single molecules or pairs of molecules adsorbed on the active centres of the surface. Efficiency of implementation - the obtained results enable the purposeful choice of the proper modifier which would enable to control the selectivity of modified minerals with respect to different organic pollutants. Field of use - environment protection.
