Progression of reflux esophagitis depends on the depth of nitric oxide metabolism disorders , and products of lipid peroxidation and increases with the BMI and the degree of inflammatory and destructive changes in the esophageal mucosa . In patients with a high BMI indicated a significant increase in the expression of COX -2 compared with normal weight individuals , which may cause the mechanisms of such patients complicated course of GERD. Studied parameters play a major role in the progression of the pathological process in GERD , especially in combination with obesity and may be seen not only as a prognostic marker , but also as targets of therapeutic intervention.
