We showed that cultivation with 5-azacytidine caused FTH1 and TRF1 promoter demethylation in breast cancer cells and changed expression levels of certain miRNAs, such as mir-10b, mir-200b, mir-34a and mir-133, through loss of CpG-islands methylation in the promoter of correspondent genes. These changes in epigenetic gene regulation of iron metabolism significantly contributed to increase of sensitivity of breast cancer cells to cisplatin and doxorubicin.
