Microstructure of the Co nanocrystalline samples was studied by methods of electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, phase composition and average grain sizes were found. Investigation was carried out of microstructure evolution of the nanocrystalline cobalt during severe plastic deformation by high pressure torsion and during uniaxial compression in temperature range of 300-4.2 K. It was found that sliding of basal dislocations is the main microscopic mechanism of plastic deformation of cobalt, considerable contribution to plasticity is also realized by twinning. Mechanical properties of nanocrystalline Co essentially depend on structural characteristics, such as the state of the grain boundaries and the quantity of twins.
