The detailed analysis of the factors determining the phenomenon of the warm-up of electrons in these systems has been carried out since the dissipative nonlinearity is determined by hot electrons (in particular, the characteristics of the light absorption by small particles, the electron -lattice energy transfer in these particles, heat transfer in a matrix, etc.). The quite high sensitivity of the diagnostic of metal nanoparticles has been achieved using the methods of nonlinear optics in the vicinity of the surface plasmon resonance as well as far from it. The literature data with respect to the investigations of the cubic optical nonlinearity of the nanostructures of the noble metals have been gathered, mainly as to gold and silver. The effect of geometrical parameters on the value of the low frequency cubic susceptibility ? ( 3), its dependence on the environment and on the wavelength with respect to the plasmon resonance is presented in the review.
