The aim of work — looking for the conditions of exfoliation of graphite intercalation compounds by nitric acid (graphite nitrate) by way of weakening of interlayer interactions in order to obtain graphene-like particles and to study their properties. The methods of investigation: derivatography and X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron and atomic-force microscopy, electron diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Using X-ray phase analysis, it has been shown that graphite reacting with concentrated nitric acid forms new phase similar to graphite oxide. Treatment of obtained substances by water leads to their exfoliation producing graphene-like nanoparticles. Another approach which we used consists in diminution of solvation interactions within the interlayer space of graphite nitrate due to introducing of additional organic intercalant. It has been shown that, in the media of corresponding organic solvent, such compounds of intercalation are quite easily exfoliating into separate graphene-like particles. Using the methods of transmission electron and atomic-force microscopy, electron diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy, we have shown that gotten graphene-like particles have very small thickness, namely, from 1 to 10 carbon layers. The significance of work consists of the fact that graphene-like products which was obtained could be utilized for creation of new materials with improved mechanic properties. Practical value of the work consists in the possibility of further using of obtained data for industrial production of quite accessible graphene materials.
