Structure of key intermediates of both types of compounds proved by NMR and mass spectroscopy. Their stereochemistry was finally proved by X-ray analysis. It is shown that both types of target products are capable to efficient induction of helical ordering in nematic liquid crystals (twisting ability is -57 and -59 m-1, respectively. We have found that the process of photoisomerization of target compounds is irreversible and is accompanied by the formation of derivatives of annealed benzotiophene. Helical twisting powers of both product of phototransformation are in several times smaller than the starting compound. It is allowed the using of photosensitive substances in LCD composites. Helical pitch of both starting compound and their mixtures formed in coarse of photo irradiation was only slightly dependent on temperature, which is favorable for their practical application.
