Purpose of the research is complex study of the Kiev-Pechersk Dormition icon as historical and art monument. The following objectives were set to achieve this goal: analyze the source base and scientific publications, compile data on the Kiev-Pechersk Dormition icon; deal with questions of archetype, dating and origin of the Dormition icon; identify major periods of the history and spreading of the cult of the miracle working icon; explore various aspects of the icon existence in the Dormition Cathedral of thе Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and forms of its worship during the XVIIХХ century; investigate the history of Dormition icon precious jewelry decoration; identify the earliest copies of the Kyiv-Pechersk Dormitin icon in museum collections and its replica. The methodology of research is based on the principle of an integrated approach to the problem. It includes the following research methods: historical, methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as methods of iconographic and comparative analysis. Scientific novelty lies in the fact of lack of publications that provide a holistic view of the Dormition icon, its history and worship. Unpublished archival documents were introduced to the scientific use. The research covers existence and worship of the Dormition icon in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra during the XVIIXX centuries. Changes of precious jewelry icon mounting were traced after archival sources of the XVIIIXIX century. The early replicas of the Kiev-Pechersk icon were identified in the museum collections.
