The lack of landcape connectivity results into subdivision of populations, limited gene flow among them, decrease in effective population size, increased inbreeding and accumulation of deleterious mutations, which, in turn, becomes a serious factor for local species extinction. On the other hand, long-term isolation of populations can result into specific adaptive diversity, which is advantageous for local persistence and should not be lost due to the restored connectivity between the landscape patches. Thus, the aspect of landscape fragmentation influence on genetic diversity, differentiation and structure of populations should be studied carefully in details for the purpose of optimization of threatened species conservation practices. The following project is aimed at solving the abovementioned problem for the case of black grouse in Polissia region and involves studying both Ukrainian and Belorussian populations of this species. Black grouse is an ecothone species, which depends on living and breeding on the forest edge. Swamps are important for black grouse existence to the same extend. Such landscape specialization makes the species particularly sensitive to landscape fragmentation and degradation. This project is focused on estimation of genetic diversity and differentiation of black grouse population in Polissia region and on identification of key habitat parameters and their relative impact on viability of the species population. The results of the study will have direct practical value for design of plans and activities towards black grouse conservation in Polissia region. The first two stages of the project included first field sampling, production of the leks map, testing of the microsatellite marker set and neurtal genetic diversity analysis of the studied Black grouse population.
