Realization and investigation of structure and optical properties of the geometrically confined liquid crystal blue phases, particularly blue phases confined by nonplanar surfaces were the goal of our project. Preparation method of liquid crystal blue phases with required lattice constant and temperature existence range was developed and investigations of optical properties of liquid crystal blue phases in visible range were carried out. By means of optical high resolution microscopy and optical conoscopy (Kossel diagram technique) we have shown that in such systems abnormal Kossel daigrams are observed and they arise not due to structure changes in blue phase lattice but due to light reflection from the drop interface. Using conoscopic observations technique spatial distribution of laser generation in dye doped blue phases was studied.
