The purpose of research - to conduct field research and assess the potential for growing forests on unproductive lands that were taken out of agricultural use. On the basis of studies to develop a system diagnostic indicators and "Technique of definition suitability of soils for afforestation". Methods of research - research conducted using methods accepted in soil science, agricultural chemistry, in forestry, in forest mensuration, typology and mathematical statistics. Theoretical and practical results -we propose a qualitative and quantitative system of diagnostic indicators soils (the content of physical clay, power humus layer and individual genetic horizons, the content of total potassium, the occurrence depth of dense rock) for measuring the use of the sandy soils, eroded soils and undeveloped soils on dense rocks for the establishment of forest crops. There was also developed the silvicultural classification for sandy land plains of Ukraine on their granulometric composition distribution and power humus layer. Novelty - the first time developed a method for evaluating the suitability of soils, which are characterized by low productivity for their afforestation. Method is based on the use of diagnostic indicators of soil potential.
