Vlokh of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine popup.description2 Spatially modulated structures with optical properties specific to photonic media are observed using polarization microscopy in thin films of liquid crystals with degenerated hybrid boundary conditions for the the orientation of the director on the film surface. Character of packing of such structures indicates that they are classified as photonic media. Analysis of polarization microscopy textures indicates that such spatialy modulated films can provide amplification of the emitted light, when doping them with a fluorescent dye. Experimental studies of lasing are performed for imperfectly aligned cholesterics. It is shown that the presence of cholesteric defects results in the broadening of allowed laser lines registered at the edges of the cholesteric photonic band gap as well as in the presence of additional lines inside the photonic bandgap gap. In cells with frosted glass substrates only the forbidden ine is observed. Mechanism of the forbidden lines is identified as random lasing mediated by weak light localization in the photonic cholesteric structure.
