In particular, development and research of new materials and components, whose properties are at the junction of the different areas are of a great interest. One of such promising area is the combination of soft matter physics and liquid crystals' physics, which gives rise to a new class of smart materials. These materials have increased sensitivity to electric, magnetic and optical fields that opens a wide range of new opportunities for their applications. The main objective of this work is to develop and study novel materials (smart materials) by doping colloids of elongated dye nanoparticles with magnetic nanoparticles of various shapes and nature (ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, etc.). The main objects of study are the colloids of dye crystallites in isotropic solvent (dodecane) and suspensions of nano-and microparticles of different nature on their basis. The project is based on controlling optical properties of dye colloidal solution doped by nano- and microparticles of various nature which do not significantly distort optical properties of the initial mixture, with electric, light and magnetic fields. The following main results have been obtained during the project: It was found that irradiation of the isotropic suspension of adsorbing nanoparticles with spatially-modulated laser beam (e.g. Gaussian beam) results in effective spatial redistribution of the nanoparticles that results in a formation of the inhomogeneous distribution of the suspension temperature in the irradiated area. This process is accompanied with the light-induced adsorption of the particles on the substrates that initiates the opposite concentration flow. The competition of the light-induced Soret effect and the light-induced adsorption determines the direction of the particles transfer that depends on the exposure. It was prepared a stable binary colloidal system of the dye crystallites in dodecane by adding magnetic particles APG935 (Ferrotec). The magneto-induced birefringence in the isotropic binary suspension of the dye crystallites in dodecane with magnetic particles inside was obtained. It was shown that in the isotropic phase of the dispersion the orientation ordering of magnetic components leads to an orientation ordering in non-magnetic components, herewith sensitivity of the system to an external magnetic field increased several times. All the results were obtained for the first time and can be used to develop new devices for information recording and displays based on the colloid of the nanocrystals dye with magnetic nanoparticles. Suspensions doped by magnetic particles can be used for visualization of weak magnetic fields.
