The object of research is artistic works of performance group TanzLaboratorium (based in Les Kurbas National Centre for Theatre Art) and other manifestations of contemporary art in Ukraine that at the moment are not systematic and usually unacknowledged at the official level. The aim of the research is to formulate another, different from soviet and postsoviet notion of theatre. The aim of the first stage ('Theatre as Symptom and Provocator of Reality') is to formulate the notion of theatre that points out socio-political fractures and is able to propose the variants of dealing with social problems among other things through complex thinking. The survey was conducted by analytical method. The results of the research are in the definition of 'contemporary art' and analysis of theatre and performance as manifestations of contemporary art. The system of art education in Ukraine and the way of organization of art life needs fundamental reorganization at the state level in order to correspond to socio-political reality of today's society. Implementation of this survey in the methodical workbook of art courses could be effective for personal development of each student.
