By transmission electron microscopy established that at sufficient level of plant illumination (180 µmol m-2 s-1) ultrastructure of mitochondria and chloroplasts was similar to that in stationary control. However, there was a significant reduction in the size of chloroplasts and a slight decrease in the grana stack thickness, which is evidence about changes in their functioning in microgravity. At the same time when a sub-optimal level of plant illumination (80 µmol m-2 s-1) was created more prominent changes in the ultrastructure of chloroplasts and increase in the variability of sizes and shapes of mitochondria were observed. These results suggest that maintenance of optimal light conditions for provide energy to the photosynthesis - an important factor for the cultivation of plants in microgravity.
