A comparative analysis of the concentrations of the studied chemical elements in needles of trees growing on the territory of the NBG, as well as in the arboretums "Askania Nova", "Alexandria", "Trostyanets" with such characteristics for the coniferous forests of Central and Eastern Europe was carried out. The levels and patterns of air pollution by heavy metals and other chemical elements in the landscapes of the NBG were studied by the method of transplantation of lichens (Hypogymnia physodes) from the unpolluted (background) natural habitats in 12 points, which are typical for special zones of territory of Garden. Qualitative and quantitative data on the characteristics of the spatial distribution of the polluted air masses in the territory of the NBG and the sources of emissions which cause the formation of this contamination were obtained. The continuous instrumental monitoring of near-surface air pollution by ozone and nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) was carried out. New data on the levels of concentrations of these pollutants and their daily and seasonal dynamics, as well as on the individual extremely high episodes were obtained. The evaluation of the potential toxic effects of ozone and nitrogen oxides on the woody and non-woody vegetation and human health was performed.
