Object of research: mechanisms of fatigue development under shiftwork. Purpose: to reveal the age features of fatigue development and formation of functional body state disorders in shiftworkers and to work out the prophylactic measures. Methods: informative, hygienic, psychological, physiological, chronobiological, mathematic-statistical. Over the 12-hour day shifts the classic correlates of fatigue development were revealed in the age groups of operators before and after 40 years old (reduction in the objective and subjective parameters of CNS functioning). When working at night the development of more deep unfavourable changes in the functional states continuum "fatigue-overfatigue", which is reflected in the decrease of the state self-evaluations while increasing the effectiveness of certain types of mental activity against the background of the simultaneous formation of the EEG correlates of fatigue and body activation. Age changes in the parameters of the human-operator CNS functioning when working night shifts around the age of 40 years old are undergoing the transition process, after which the physiological maintenance of the activity becomes more expensive (the exhaustion in adaptation resources of the brain bioelectrical activity, the increase in the sympathetic activation). In human-operators over 40 years old, the share of parasympathetic regulation of heart rate decreases progressively from 3 a.m. against the background of the increase in the relative share of sympathetic influences, and in 2 hours (at 5 a.m.) there is the peak of ventricular arrhythmia - 4 times higher compared to the group average daily level. At the same periods (3 a.m. and 5 a.m.), in operators older than 40 years old the peak-shaped increases in variability of QT interval duration have been found. Age decrease in parasympathetic regulation of heart rate is being enhanced at the night shifts compared to the day shifts, and during both shifts increases progressively against the backdrop of the increase the sympathetic regulation share - in parallel with the fatigue development. Under daily duties in 38% of the surgeons a hypertension was found, in 94% - disturbed self regulation of blood circulation; after having worked for more than 10 years they have significantly increased risk of the asymmetry development in blood pressure on the upper limbs. The research results indicate the problematics of the prolonged night work for health preservation of mental workers. A method for correcting the body functional state using binaural synchronization of the brain hemispheres activity has been elaborated. The recommendations for the prophylaxis of the formation of functional body state disorders in shiftworkers have been worked out. The research results will be used in further research to improve the physiological-hygienic regulation of shiftwork.
