Purpose - to study comprehensively genetic traits and economic and biological characteristics of breeding material and to create high-yielding, tolerant to major diseases onion variety of universal type. Methods: field and laboratory. Rersults. New onion variety of pungint type Balada was created. Two lines - with high survival and with moderate resistance to false mildew - were registered at the National Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine. In the nursery the source material 16 varieties and seven hybrids exceeding standards by yielding capacity have been identified. On natural infectious background practically resistant and slightly susceptible to diseases samples were found. Fixers of sterility were chosen for plants with signs of cytoplasmic male sterility.. An inventor's certificate for the variety Harmoniia was received as well as patent for useful model "Method of studying the impact of volatile fractions of phytoncides of onion crop varieties on Micromycetes spores".
