Objective: To establish the genetic, physiological and morphological and biological aspects of hardiness of winter barley in the Forest-steppe of Ukraine under conditions of climate change and on this basis to create varieties with increased winter hardiness, high productivity potential, resistance to lodging and major diseases. Research methods - conventional in breeding self-pollinating cereal crops. Results. General scheme of winter barley breeding for winter hardiness was worked out and introduced into selection process at Breeding Barley Laboratory of MIW. Technology for obtaining winter barley dihaploid lines was optimized. A new breeding material exceeding the standard in performance, resistance to abiotic and biotic factors has been created, evaluated and selected in all links of breeding process. Three new winter barley varieties with the optimal combination of potential productivity, hardiness, resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to major diseases were transferred to the State strain testing in 2015 MIP Oscar (Application No 15019004) MIP Yason (Application No 15019002) and MIP Hladiator (Application No 15019005). Three new breeding lines with a complex of agronomic traits will be transferred to the State strain testing in 2016 - MIP LIDER, MIP Korsar and MIP Darii.
