The aim of the work is to investigate the mechanisms of shock-wave synthesis of silicon carbide from separate elements and the structure of the residual phases of carbon and silicon. It has been established that the beta-SiC along with small amount of 6H-SiC forms under the shock compression synthesis, at that the SiC synthesis occurs at temperatures higher than that for silicon melting. The SiC output increases monotonically as the density decreases and reaches maximal value of 70% at 50%. After removing of remained silicon and carbon the synthesized SiC powders have been sintered at T = 1600 - 2000 C under the static compression at P = 7.7 GPa. The hardness of the latter polycrystalline SiC samples was of ~ 25 ± 5 GPa under the 2H load.
