A. V. YA. YURYEV NATIONAL ACADEMY OF AGRАRIAN SCIENCES OF UKRAINE popup.description2 Study Object - winter and spring wheat varieties, lines, species - counterparts, amphidiploids of different genomic structure. Study Purpose - to determine effects of gene complexes on grain quality upon distant hybridization of cultivated wheat with minor species and to confirm introgressions using storage proteins. On this basis, to create starting material with enhanced genetic variability in terms of grain quality parameters. Study Methods - methods of field experiments, biochemical analysis, statistical analysis. Theoretical and Practical Results - The investigations improved the method of expanding wheat genetic diversity in terms of grain quality traits, involving gene pool of species-counterparts and amphidiploids of different genomic structure in distant hybridization. As a result, a method for selection of introgressive wheat genotypes using electrophoresis of storage proteins in polyacrylamide gel was published. In practice, five collections of introgressive soft winter wheat lines that carry introgressions from such species-counterparts as T. spelta cv. Schwbenkorn, T. durum, Aegilotricm cylindroaestivum, H 269 / 97-10, Wheat / Thynopyrum intermedium, T. spelta, Elytricum fertile were created. The presence of introgressions was confirmed by electrophoresis of storage proteins in polyacrylamide gel. Effects of gene complexes from species-counterparts and remote species on grain quality were evidenced by the results of technological and biochemical tests on flour of introgressive lines. The collections introgressive winter wheat lines with enhanced genetic variability in terms of grain quality parameters and other valuable economic characteristics ((high protein content (13 - 13.5%), frost hardiness 9 points)) were transferred to the Laboratory of Winter Wheat Breeding and Physiology for inclusion in regular crosses and selections. In addition, four collection of introgressive soft and hard spring wheat lines carrying introgressions from such species-counterparts as T. ispahanicum, T. dicoccum var. aeroginosum, T. petropavlovsky, Tritordeum, T. polonicum, T.hexapolonicum were created. The presence of foreign gene complexes was confirmed by electrophoresis of storage proteins in polyacrylamide gels. Effects of these gene complexes on grain quality were proved by full baking analysis and other supporting methods of testing grain quality. Lines are characterized by high protein content (14%), large kernels (1000-kernel weight 46 - 48 g), drought resistance. The collections of these lines were transferred to the Laboratory of Spring Wheat Breeding for inclusion in the cross and selection system. The novelty of the results consists in the fact that introgressive lines derived as a result of our research is a unique starting material for breeding new top-quality varieties of soft winter wheat as well as soft and hard spring wheat in the conditions of the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. The effectiveness of implementation of lines in breeding is determined by a set of valuable traits, which lines are noticeable for. Usage of them results in expanding genetic diversity of soft spring wheat as well as soft and hard winter wheat, increasing the efficiency of breeding of these crops for quality. Scope of Application - use of guidelines to improve the efficiency of selection of introgressive lines during distant hybridization; direct inclusion of introgressive lines in breeding to create new top-quality varieties of winter and spring wheat at the Plant Production Institute nd. a V.Ya. Yuriev NAAS and other breeding facilities.
